The History of Boyle & Dalton
Many aspiring authors are interested in self-publishing. They want to invest in their own book, keep a majority of their well-earned profits and retain all the rights and creative control. But they also know that many self-published books lack quality and are poorly produced.
That’s when our founder, Brad Pauquette, had an idea. He created a company which allowed authors to invest in their own books, get a huge royalty rate, and retain complete and full creative control—while balancing the assurance of quality. If it wasn’t good enough for a traditional publisher, then it wouldn’t be published under this imprint. Here at Boyle & Dalton, we discovered a way to keep the reputation for quality, while balancing a fair split of cost between production and royalties. A system with fair risk and a fair reward with a quality production infrastructure backing it all up.
Thus, Boyle & Dalton was born. Our first title launched in September 2014. We knew The Abundant Bohemian by Joe Downing was set above the rest. Joe invested in the production of his book and we worked together to produce this exceptional title. Not only did Joe receive a book that had the quality of a traditional publishing company, but he received a royalty rate that was more than 10x what he would have received if he’d chosen traditional publishing.
We started slowly as we tested the model and worked out the bugs. It was hard at first to turn down titles that didn’t meet our quality standard. There was a huge temptation to build out the catalog with whatever books we could sign. But we stuck with our principles, and only accepted the best. Our catalog today represents the quality that we knew we could achieve.
We only publish books that we feel represent the quality of our name. And we insist that every author undergo a rigorous 5-step production process. Learn more about that here.
Nowadays, a lot of companies are throwing around the word “Hybrid.” But these are just self-publishing companies that want you to feel like you’re not self-publishing. Unfortunately, many of these companies are not truly vetting books (even when they claim to do so), and they’re not insisting their authors undergo a complete production process to ensure quality.
